After a healthy win against Hackney the previous week, we ventured up the A10 to Hertford. Having lost there start of this season, we were keen to produce a strong performance against a mix of Hertford's mostly 2s with a few first teamers. We lost then mostly due to their backline in the previous game and emphasized to our boys to not give any space to their talented backs. We knew our back three would be in for a busy morning.
OGs started off strong, straight from kick off, a powerful catch and run from our no. 8 Isaac supported by fellow forwards who drove to within 2m of the try line. A pick and go produced an early try to settle our nerves.
Hertford too had a powerful and mobile no. 8 who made many powerful surging runs and we saw our team, both forwards and backs tackle valiantly to halt him several times.
OGs also pinned Hertford back with some probing kicks, part of our plan to not let their back 3 run riot. It worked. Part of the kick and chase game allowed our outside centre Oran to apply real pressure on their backline, supported in midfield by Finlay at 12.
Our outside centre Oran went wide with some good quick ball supplied by our forwards to get 2 quick tries leaving Hertford a little stunned. However they didn't stop and their no. 8 broke through to register a try which was justified given the strong response Hertford showed to going down by 3 scores.
Second half started at a frantic pace with Hertford determined to fight back and were awarded a penalty try for obstruction on their outside half after a cute kick and chase after some sustained pressure on the OGs 22.
OGs battled on and got another 2 tries, Oran registering again with another run out wide but pick of the half was Jace coming off the wing and busting through a couple of tackles to go under the posts.
Special mention to the whole pack today who worked tirelessly to provide a platform for the backs to showcase their skills that they've worked on throughout the season. An extra shout out to our newcomer Roman who played at tight head, who displayed great power to get within a metre of the try line with 4 Hertford players needed to stop him. Along with Dan at loose head, we have a proper pair of modern props who provide us with lots of metres in each drive. Our backrow ran their socks off, shutting down runs and getting valuable metres too. Our wingers and full back worked hard to keep out a talented back line from Hertford.
Overall, a great team performance and fitting for our penultimate game of this tough 22/23 season. It should also be noted our team structure has been constantly shuffled around all season due to injuries and it's testament to the boys they have remained so adaptable.
