Our U16s are open to players in School Year 11, and at this stage rugby takes another step forward. The game is faster, more physical and more tactical, with greater expectations around commitment, teamwork and individual responsibility.

Players are now building towards the transition into Colts and ultimately senior rugby, so training reflects that progression. While enjoyment will always be at the heart of what we do, there is a stronger focus on performance, preparation and developing well-rounded rugby players.

Training builds on all the fundamentals, with increased emphasis on position-specific skills, set pieces, attacking and defensive structures, game management and decision-making under pressure. Players are expected to understand not only their own role, but how their position fits into the wider team and how to adapt as a game develops.

Physical development also becomes increasingly important. Sessions continue to focus on safe and effective contact, strength, fitness and conditioning, helping players prepare for the demands of competitive rugby while ensuring player welfare remains a priority.

Fixtures form a major part of the season and there is naturally a greater competitive edge. We want our players to want to win, to challenge themselves and to perform at their best. But just as importantly, we expect them to compete in the right way – showing respect for teammates, coaches, officials and opposition, whatever the result.

At U16s, players are also encouraged to take greater ownership of their rugby. That means turning up, communicating, working hard at training and being there for your teammates. Rugby is a team sport and every member of the squad has a role to play, both on and off the pitch.

For many, these are the years when teammates become genuine friends and rugby becomes much more than just a Sunday morning activity. We want our U16s to enjoy that experience, create some brilliant memories and be proud to pull on the club shirt.

Everything we do is underpinned by England Rugby’s core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship – TREDS, and we expect our U16s to lead by example and represent those values throughout the club.

Work hard, compete hard, enjoy your rugby and be there for your teammates. New players are always welcome to come along and become part of the squad.
