This was to be our last league game in division 2 this season and whilst it was met with a little sadness, the whole team was up to the final challenge of our league season.
With a squad of 19 players, we were well prepared for the away game at the magnificent Trailfinders stadium.
Our UK weather didn't disappoint and torrential rain was with us the whole morning so the instructions were simple, keep the ball, stay close to each other and empty the tank for this game.
Ealing from playing them last year and a friendly this season had resulted in losses albeit by small scores, would be up for this. The boys over the years mostly know each other and some of them from the Middx county squad too.
The game kicked off with some serious pressure from Ealing and we were camped in our half which resulted in a try for the home side. However we were not to be denied and after some impressive pressure from our forwards (shout out to Louis and Ryan) Oscar Roche, our no.8 with assistance from his pack, barged over for a try for OGs.
Some impressive kicking by our outside half Oisin, pinned back the home team and quick ball from our 9 Oscar Squier maintained the pressure in what were awful conditions with the rain. This affected both sides with some handling errors and a ref which didn't seem to let either side really go for the jackals, something Hugo, Ethan and Harry Boon usually thrive on.
Having Ryan and Louis back in the engine room, along with Harry O in the lineout, was starting to pay dividends but unfortunately, the final pass didn't quite come off but the boys kept going.
Another impressive team try with the ball being shipped from forwards to back and back to the forwards saw our captain Dan smash over for a try making it 15-10 to Ealing with neither side able to convert due to the atrocious conditions. A quick warm up in the changing rooms, some tactics and thoughts shared, saw us run out with renewed purpose for the second half.
Second half started with sustained pressure from Ealing and OGs were resolute in their defence from 1-15. Special note to our backrow/winger Luke Ridley who managed to pull off every tackle against the dangerous right winger from Ealing and some fine fullback play from Amaan sweeping up at the back.
All over the pitch, big shifts were put in. A disallowed try by Ryan seemed a harsh for what looked like a certain grounding, ended the match 15-10 to Ealing and whilst it was a loss, the whole team and coaches were happy with the effort and resolve the boys showed.
We, the coaching team are very proud of this performance against a massive club and indeed the whole season. The coaches have had to ask several players to play out of position, taking them out of their comfort zones and they've responded with dedication and trust in us as their coaches.
A massive thank you to the boys, parents, guardians, past players who helped and a special note to our new coach Joe Ronchetti who brought new energy to our team and was an ever present across the season.
It would be remiss of me not to mention the whole squad for this season as every boy has contributed and should be named. It has been our pleasure to coach you and we do ask that every one of you continue to play rugby wherever you end up and if you're local stay with OGs.
