The Men's Senior team travelled to sunny Kent to take on a Sittingbourne team that have only been beaten once this season, with a place in the National Cup Final at stake. OGs started well and forced an early penalty which Jordan put right into the corner for a 5m attacking line out. Despite controlling several phases near the line OGs were unable to convert the opportunity and Sittingbourne were able to clear. Sittingbourne then got into their stride and their pack, which had a considerable size advantage, started to control possession and territory. Sittingbourne's first try came from a good break by their right wing who beat most of OGs cover, drew the last defender and passed back inside to a support runner for the score. Their next score came from a scrum about 20 metres out from OGs line. With the OGs back row having to commit to the scrum to counter the weight disadvantage, Sittingbourne's No 7 was able to pick up from the base and sprint to the line almost unopposed. The game seemed to be getting away from OGs, but straight from the restart Joe charged down an attempted clearance kick and regathered the ball to score. Sittingbourne started to put pressure on the breakdown and forced two penalties for holding on, both of which were converted. Their pack then forced a mistake from OGs on their own lineout, gathered the loose ball and mauled their way over for another try. OGs got back into the Sittingbourne 22 and Andy was held up over the line, so the score remained 27-7 at half time.
The second half saw the game develop as Sittingbourne's pack against OGs backs. Chris made a clean break through the middle and off-loaded to Joe for a try under the posts. Sittingbourne's pack then exerted their weight advantage to score a pushover try. OGs responded with a repeat of their previous score, this time Chris being the beneficiary of a break by Jordan. Sittingbourne then set up an attacking line out with the resulting catch & drive proving unstoppable. OGs responded with the try of the match. The ball went through multiple pairs of hands, quick in & out passes flatfooted the defence and Sam scored unopposed. Sittingbourne were rattled, but also expereinced enough to retain possesion and run the clock down for a 41-28 win.
OGs Seniors did the club proud, but Sittingbourne were the better team and deserve to be in the final next Sunday.
