Old Grammarians 17 v Cuffley 1sts 15

Iain Pickard

Following last week’s excellent victory against Fullerians 3rd XV, Old Grammarians 2nds welcomed Cuffley 1sts to WEL.

The 2nd XV arrived on Saturday looking to put together a winning run in the league together and hopes were high as we have already beaten Cuffley already this season. I would like to thank Jeff for agreeing to step in at the last minute and referee the game. (Glad to see that your body made it through the 80 mins)

Playing down the hill in the 1st half the OG’s took time to get into the game, however we were soon in front as the forwards bullied their opposite numbers and Shane Bell went over in the corner for his first try of the season. The conversion was missed from Tom Bolt.

OG’s were soon further in front as the forwards produced some good ball for the backs and Dante Olaseni managed to break through the opposition backs and score a try in the corner. The conversion was missed by Tom Bolt.

In the 35th Minute, There was a nasty Injury to Andy Buckley who took a bang to the head and was knocked out cold. I would like to take this opportunity to thank James Charlton (Cuffley player and Physio) for ensuring that Andy was ok and giving him good medical attention whilst he waited for an ambulance. We decided to finish the game on the first team pitch for the 2nd Half.

We started the 2nd Half very poorly and Cuffley were soon in front from two well worked tries due to some poor tackling from OG’s. It was a very scrappy 2nd Half, OG’s made one vital mistake we kept trying to out muscle the very strong Cuffley pack rather than get the ball out to our backs who had the ability to score tries.

We finished the game in the Cuffley 22, the referee told the cuffley players to keep their hands out the ruck and fortunately for OG’s the Cuffley Prop didn’t take any notice and we were awarded a penalty. Wide on the right hand side of the pitch. After a brief discussion Harrison Snelling tapped the ball to himself, Dummied the ball to Paul Blackwell, Karl Harington, Iain Pickard and run all the way across the pitch past some of own backs and went in for a try in the corner. The scores were now 15-15, which in all honesty was a fair score line. However Tom Bolt was having none of that and slotted over the conversion to make the score 17-15 to Old Grammarians.
